British troops of the 6th Airborne Division reached the Baltic Coast of Wismar, due north of Schwerin, Germany on 3rd May where they made contact with a Russian armoured squadron which had pushed westward from Rostock.
Men of the two armies quickly made friends, and exchanged drinks and cigarettes.
