The RAF Spitfire squadron "County of Surrey"

The RAF Spitfire squadron " County of Surrey", known as " Churchills Own", of which the Prime Minister is honorary Air Commodore, arrived in India in 1942, to take part in the defence of that country, and in that role achieved excellent results, particularly during the siege of Imphal.
Operating from an Arakan Jungle strip, this famous auxiliary squadron is now helping to drive the Japanese out of Burma.
The Commonwealth is well represented in the squadron; the Commanding comes from Trinidad, and
there are Australians, including twin brothers from Melbourne, Canadians, New Zealanders and a Kenya man among the pilots.
Among the ground crew there are still five of the auxiliary air force personnel, who joined the squadron on its formation in 1938.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic RAF Spitfire squadron "County of Surrey" also known as "Churchills Own" during their deployment in India in 1942. Led by Squadron Leader Tim Meyer from Trinidad, this renowned auxiliary squadron played a crucial role in defending the country and achieved remarkable results, particularly during the siege of Imphal. Operating from an Arakan Jungle strip, they are now actively involved in driving out the Japanese forces from Burma. The diversity within the squadron is evident with pilots hailing from various Commonwealth nations such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Kenya. Notably, twin brothers from Melbourne proudly serve among their ranks. Additionally, five ground crew members who joined the squadron upon its formation in 1938 continue to contribute their expertise. In this photograph taken in April 1945, we see a group of distinguished pilots representing both the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries. Standing left to right are Squadron Leader Tim Meyer (Trinidad), Flight Lieutenant A. A. Robinson (Essex), Flight Sergeant H. V. Watson (Argyll), Flying Officer Peter Grant (New Zealand), Flying Officer E. G. Green (Montreal), Flying Officer Philip Archer (Kenya), Warrant Officer K. I Matthews (Cardiff) and Warrant Officer Don Fletcher (Australia). Preserved by Memory Lane Prints for historical remembrance purposes only; this image serves as a testament to the bravery and camaraderie displayed by these valiant individuals who fought tirelessly for freedom during World War II's most challenging times.
