A Whirlwind bomber in flight. United Kingdom.
The Westland Whirlwind was a British twin-engined heavy fighter[citation needed] developed by Westland Aircraft. A contemporary of the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane, it was the first single-seat, twin-engined, cannon-armed fighter of the Royal Air Force.
When it first flew in 1938, the Whirlwind was one of the fastest combat aircraft in the world and with four Hispano-Suiza HS.404 20 mm autocannon in its nose, the most heavily armed. Protracted development problems with its Rolls-Royce Peregrine engines delayed the project and few Whirlwinds were built. During the Second World War, only three RAF squadrons were equipped with the aircraft but despite its success as a fighter and ground attack aircraft, it was withdrawn from service in 1943.
The letter SPOA are seen on the side of the plane.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a Whirlwind bomber in full flight, soaring through the skies of the United Kingdom. Developed by Westland Aircraft, the Westland Whirlwind was an extraordinary British twin-engined heavy fighter that made its mark during World War II. Standing alongside iconic aircraft like the Spitfire and Hurricane, it holds a unique place in aviation history as the first single-seat, twin-engined, cannon-armed fighter of the Royal Air Force. With its impressive speed and firepower, this formidable aircraft was armed with four Hispano-Suiza HS. 404 20mm autocannon in its nose – making it one of the most heavily armed combat planes of its time. However, due to prolonged development issues with its Rolls-Royce Peregrine engines, only a limited number of Whirlwinds were ever produced. Despite this setback, the Whirlwind proved itself as both an exceptional fighter and ground attack aircraft during its service years. Although only three RAF squadrons were equipped with this remarkable plane throughout World War II, it showcased great success on various missions. Intriguingly enough, we can spot the letters "SPOA" painted on the side of this particular aircraft in the photograph. This image was captured on March 5th, 1943 – a testament to not just an era defined by war but also to human ingenuity and technological advancements that shaped our world forever.
