EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant print from Memory Lane Prints, we are transported back to the 1940s, a time of great conflict and tragedy. The image captures young siblings Michael Briggs (aged 2) and his older sister Christine (3), who visited an exhibition of toys held at Oxford Street in central London. It was a rare moment of joy amidst the chaos of war. Their father, C. J. Briggs, bravely served as an auxiliary fireman during the Battle of Britain, volunteering for the Fire Service to protect their city. However, fate dealt a cruel blow when he was severely injured by a High Explosive bomb in the docks of London during the blitz of September 1940. Despite receiving medical attention in hospital, he tragically passed away soon after. In this heartwarming picture, Michael and Christine stand alongside their mother Mrs A. Briggs – a strong woman facing unimaginable loss with courage and resilience. Their smiles may hide their pain but serve as a reminder that even in times of darkness, children find solace in simple pleasures like receiving gifts. This photograph encapsulates not only the innocence and beauty of childhood but also serves as a powerful testament to the sacrifices made by countless families during World War Two. It is through images like these that we remember those who lived through such challenging times and honor their enduring spirit.
