EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of Swansea in the 1950s. The focal point is the magnificent curved building on the left, known as The Great Western Hotel. Once a grand establishment, it gracefully embraced the junction of High Street and Alexandra Road. Interestingly, during its heyday in the 1890s, it served as a temperance hotel promoting abstinence from alcohol. Sadly, progress took its toll on this architectural gem, and it was demolished in 1974. However, through this snapshot frozen in time, we can still appreciate its elegance and significance to Swansea's history. Below The Great Western Hotel lies Hasquencort and Jones - a popular clothing store offering an array of fashionable garments including sports wear and rainwear. This street-level shop adds vibrancy to the scene with its display windows showcasing stylish attire. On the left side of this picture stands another prominent landmark: The Grand Hotel. Its presence further enhances the charm of this nostalgic moment captured on July 5th, 1957. As we gaze upon this image from Memory Lane Prints by Western Mail Archive, we are transported back to an era where traffic flowed through T-junctions amidst unpredictable Welsh weather. It serves as a reminder of how much has changed over time while preserving precious memories that continue to resonate with those who hold Swansea dear to their hearts.
