Forty nine men lost their lives in one of Britains worst-ever double sea tragedies
Forty nine men lost their lives in one of Britains worst-ever double sea tragedies. All but eight of them were the crew of the 7, 219 ton Liberty ship Santampa, driven ashore on the treacherous Sker rocks near Porthcawl (Glamorgan). The eight men were the crew of the Mumbles lifeboat, who lost their lives in a gallant attempt to rescue the crew of the stricken ship.
Picture shows: Boatman W.L. Howell, one of the Mumbles lifeboat crew who died in the tragedy.
