EDITORS COMMENTS
Great photo capturing the intensity and excitement of the 1970 Monza 1000 kms race at the iconic Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy. In this thrilling moment, Henri Pescarolo and Johnny Servoz-Gavin of the Matra Sports team are hard at work in the pits, preparing their Matra-Simca MS650 for the next stint of the grueling endurance race. The Monza 1000 kms, held on April 25, 1970, was a true test of speed, endurance, and teamwork for the drivers and their support crews. With its high-speed straights, challenging curves, and unforgiving barriers, Monza presented a formidable challenge for both man and machine. Pescarolo and Servoz-Gavin, two talented and experienced drivers, were no strangers to the demands of endurance racing. They had already achieved success together in the 1968 24 Hours of Le Mans, where they finished second in a Matra MS630. But the Monza 1000 kms presented a new set of challenges, and the team was determined to come out on top. In this photo, we see the team in the midst of a pit stop, with Servoz-Gavin standing by the car as Pescarolo climbs out. The crew quickly attend to the car, checking tire pressure, fuel levels, and making any necessary adjustments. The team's focus and determination are palpable, as they work together to get their Matra-Simca MS650 back out on the track as quickly as possible. The Monza 1000 kms was a thrilling race, with numerous lead changes and close battles between the top teams. In the end, Pescarolo and Servoz-Gavin finished in second place, just behind the winning Ferrari 512S driven by Chris Amon and Nino Vaccarella. Despite the narrow defeat, the Matra Sports team could be proud of their strong performance and their unwavering commitment to the race. This photo captures the essence of their determination and the excitement of endurance racing at Monza in 1970.
