EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a piece of advertising history from 1927-28, showcasing the iconic Drumhead Cigarettes pull-out counter card by Players. The three-part card is a visual delight, with each section telling its own story. At the back, we see a drummer boy proudly carrying a pack on his back, dressed in an elaborate tailed coat and wearing a busby hat. His white breeches and gaiters add to the military-inspired uniform that exudes elegance. In the center section, bold text proudly displays "PLAYERs // DRUMHEAD // Cigarettes" emphasizing the brand's name and product. Moving towards the front section, we find packs of 5 and 10 cigarettes neatly arranged on either side. The accompanying text reads "5 FOR 2d. // 10 FOR 4d" - an enticing offer for tobacco enthusiasts of that era. Turning over this card reveals additional intriguing details. A handwritten note kindly requests its return to archives while below it sits a rubber stamp bearing John Player & Sons' store address on Garden Street in Nottingham. Adding further charm to this historical artifact is a label indicating Mardons as window novelty specialists who excelled in embossed showcards among other services such as varnishing and gelatinizing frames. This print not only showcases Nottingham's rich advertising heritage but also offers us glimpses into fashion trends, military influences, music culture through drumming imagery—all tied together by John Player & Sons' renowned tobacco products.
