EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print showcases a rectangular counter card of No. 3 cigarettes from the year 1920-21. The design features a sophisticated grey stripe background with a plain grey border, creating an elegant contrast. Positioned on the left side is a black panel adorned with a gold edge, proudly displaying an open box of No. 3 cigarettes by John Player & Sons, Nottingham's renowned tobacco brand. The text on the counter card reads "PLAYERs // NO. 3 // VIRGINIA // CIGARETTES" in bold lettering, emphasizing the quality and origin of these fine tobacco products. A hanging loop at the top allows for easy display or storage. On the reverse side of this historical artifact, we find intriguing details about its journey through time. A rubber stamp reveals that it was originally sourced from Mardon, Son & Hall on April 7th, 1920 at their Caxton Works location in Bristol. Additionally, two hand-written notes provide further insights into its history: "Approved // 8-4-21" and "30-9-21". These dates suggest that this particular counter card received approval on August 4th, 1921 and possibly underwent another significant event or update on September 30th of that same year. This piece serves as both advertising memorabilia and a testament to Nottingham's rich heritage in tobacco production during the early twentieth century.
