EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a stunning advertisement for No. 3 cigarettes, dating back to 1921-22. The rectangular counter card boasts a glossy finish and features an exquisite classical swags and tails motif along the top and sides. At the center top, a small plaque showcases an elegant man donning a top hat and loosely tied bow tie while enjoying his cigarette. The text boldly reads "PLAYERs // NO. 3 // Virginia // Cigarettes // John Player & Sons // Nottingham" emphasizing the brand's origin in Nottingham, England. On the reverse side of the card, there is a support that allows it to stand upright as well as a hanging loop for display purposes. A label affixed to the card reveals its manufacturer as Mardons Window Novelties, known for their expertise in embossed showcards and other decorative items such as varnishing, gelatinizing, and frame making. This particular piece was crafted by their skilled artisans based in Bristol and London. Adding further intrigue to this historical artifact is a handwritten note indicating its creation date of 1921. With elements like bow ties, top hats, and fashionable attire showcased on this advertising masterpiece from John Player & Sons tobacco company (not mentioned), it provides us with glimpses into both early twentieth-century fashion trends and innovative marketing strategies of yesteryears
