Group of 29 miners posed underground at the 278 fathom level. The majority of the miners are wearing felt hats, either with the brim intact or with the brim removed. while others have tallow candles affixed to their hats with lumps of clay. Six of the group are smoking pipes. One miner holds a large saw. The group shows a whole range of ages. The youngest members of the group seem to be at the front, particularly the very young looking boy standing with drills tied with rope and slung around his shoulders, standing in the second row second from the left. This print from 11th July, 1894, takes us back in time to the depths of Levant Mine in St Just, Penwith, Cornwall. A group of twenty-nine miners are strikingly posed underground at the impressive 278 fathom level. The majority don felt hats, some with brims intact and others with tallow candles securely fastened using lumps of clay. It is fascinating to observe six members indulging in a momentary respite as they enjoy their pipes amidst the challenging conditions. The diversity within this group is remarkable; it showcases miners spanning various ages and experiences. Notably, the youngest faces can be found at the forefront of this snapshot. Among them stands an incredibly youthful-looking boy adorned with drills tied around his shoulders using rope – a testament to the grit and determination instilled in these individuals from an early age.
