A Trinity House notice, dated 1905, gives opening hours for the public. The lighthouse was built by Thomas Fonnereau in 1751 as a twin coal-fired light, converted to oil in 1811, and electricity in 1874. Stepping back in time to the early 1900s, this print captures a close-up view of the iconic Lizard lighthouse in Landewednack, Cornwall. Standing proudly against the dramatic coastal backdrop, this historic landmark has guided countless sailors and ships along the treacherous south coast for over two centuries. Intriguingly, at the gate of this magnificent structure stands a lady, her presence adding an air of mystery and enchantment to the scene. Her purpose here remains unknown, but she symbolizes the human connection to these towering beacons of light that have safeguarded seafarers throughout history. Originally constructed by Thomas Fonnereau in 1751 as a twin coal-fired light, this architectural marvel underwent several transformations over time. Converted to oil in 1811 and then electrified in 1874, it finally received a rotating lens installation in its eastern tower during 1903. This technological advancement led to removing the western tower's light altogether. Today, we can only imagine how awe-inspiring it must have been witnessing those beams piercing through darkness on stormy nights.
