Maria Asumpta, Polruan, Lanteglos by Fowey, Cornwall. October 1992
Minor repair work being undertaken on the worlds oldest wooden sailing ship at the Fowey harbour commissioners slipway at Polruan. She was built in Spain in 1858 and continued to sail until the 1930s when a single engine was installed. Trading until 1978 she fell into decay, but an 18 month restoration programme in the early 1980s brought the ship back to seaworthiness. In 1995 the Maria Asumpta was on her first voyage after a refit in Gloucester when she hit bad weather and on the afternoon of 30th May prepared to enter Padstow harbour. The captain, Mark Litchfield, decided to sail between The Mouls and Pentire Point, not a route recommended by the Admiralty, she hit rocks and the crew abandoned ship with three men losing their lives. Mr Litchfield was charged with manslaughter due to gross negligence, was found guilty and jailed for 18 months. Photographer: Jonathan Barker

Capturing History - The Majestic Maria Asumpta
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases the iconic Maria Asumpta, a testament to maritime history. Taken in October 1992 at Polruan, Lanteglos by Fowey, Cornwall, it depicts minor repair work being undertaken on the world's oldest wooden sailing ship at the Fowey harbour commissioners slipway. Built in Spain back in 1858, this magnificent vessel sailed proudly until the 1930s when modernization led to the installation of a single engine. Continuing its trading ventures until 1978, Maria Asumpta eventually fell into disrepair. However, an extensive restoration program spanning eighteen months during the early 1980s breathed new life into her timeworn hull and restored her seaworthiness. Tragically, fate dealt a cruel blow during her first voyage after refurbishment in Gloucester. Battling treacherous weather conditions on May 30th, 1995 while preparing to enter Padstow harbor under Captain Mark Litchfield's command; disaster struck as she veered off course between The Mouls and Pentire Point – an ill-advised route not recommended by the Admiralty. Colliding with unforgiving rocks resulted in a devastating loss of life for three crew members who valiantly abandoned ship. The subsequent investigation held Mr. Litchfield accountable for gross negligence leading to manslaughter charges and his subsequent imprisonment for eighteen months.
