EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this print of the Treffry pilchard cellar, Newquay, Cornwall, taken in the late 1800s. The image transports us to a bygone era when fishing was at the heart of coastal communities. The photograph showcases the impressive Treffry fish cellar perched above Towan Beach, surrounded by charming buildings and towering cliffs. Built around 1845, Treffry served as a vital hub for processing and storing pilchards - a staple catch of the region. Interestingly nicknamed "Flour and Fat" its origins remain shrouded in mystery. Nevertheless, it adds an air of intrigue to this historic structure that played such a crucial role in sustaining local livelihoods. Behind every successful fishery were dedicated individuals who ensured its smooth operation. William Osborne served as the cellars huer, responsible for spotting shoals of fish from his vantage point on high ground. Isaac Pappin held the esteemed position of master seiner while Thomas Jenkin acted as agent overseeing day-to-day affairs. This extraordinary snapshot captures not only a physical location but also offers glimpses into lives intertwined with Cornwall's rich maritime heritage. As we admire this remarkable piece captured by an unknown photographer, we are reminded of our connection to those who came before us and their enduring legacy.
