1737 Carl Linnaeus in Lapland dress HD

Carl Linnaeus mezzotint engraving by H. Kingsbury with later hand colouring, published by Dr. Thornton 1805 from an original in his possession. The original was by Martin Hoffman, painted in Hartecamp, Netherlands, 1737. The engraving was issued with Robert Thorntons New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus von Linnaeus.ins London, 1807. The picture shows a young Linnaeus in Uppsala wearing the Lapland dress he proudly brought back from his 1732 Lapland journeys (much of it the gift of his hosts while there). His great works including Systema Naturae are visible behind him. The Lapland trip was in some senses his equivalent of Darwins Beagle voyage - though short and not unduly demanding by the standards of the day. When this image was painted, 1837, Linnaeus had just produced (Systemae Naturae 1835) the basis of the binomial taxonomical classification still in use today

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned botanist Carl Linnaeus in a moment of pride and accomplishment. Dressed in traditional Lapland attire, which he acquired during his expeditions to Lapland in 1732, Linnaeus stands tall with confidence. The mezzotint engraving by H. Kingsbury, colored by hand and published by Dr. Thornton in 1805, showcases the remarkable attention to detail that brings this historical figure to life. Linnaeus's groundbreaking contributions to science are evident not only through his appearance but also through the presence of his great works displayed behind him. Among them is Systema Naturae, published in 1735, which laid the foundation for the binomial taxonomical classification still used today. The Lapland trip depicted here holds significant importance as it served as Linnaeus's equivalent of Darwin's iconic Beagle voyage. Although relatively short and less arduous compared to later scientific expeditions, it provided valuable insights into flora and fauna that influenced Linnaeus's botanical studies. In this image painted in 1837 by Martin Hoffman at Hartecamp, Netherlands, we witness a young Linnaeus on the cusp of greatness. His fur coat symbolizes both insulation against harsh climates and an emblem of respect bestowed upon him by his generous hosts during his time in Lapland. This mesmerizing artwork offers a glimpse into the life and achievements of one of history's most influential botanists – Carl Linnaeus – forever immortalized through this masterful depiction captured over two centuries ago.
