EDITORS COMMENTS
This 1888 colour lithograph takes us back in time to the Triassic coast, as depicted in Dr. Schubert's Naturgeschichte - Geologie, Mineralreich, Palaontologie. Published in Stuttgart by J. F. Shreiber, this remarkable piece of art showcases the expertise of German lithographers who dominated colour lithography during that era. In the foreground on the left side, we see Belodon, a crocodile-like phytosaur, while on the right side stands Mastodonsaurus, a temnospondyl amphibian. Interestingly, at the time this print was created, Mastodonsaurus was believed to be responsible for footprints found in Triassic sandstones and described as Chirotherium. However, recent research suggests that these trace fossil tracks actually belong to reptiles of the Pseudosuchia group. The vivid colours and intricate details bring this prehistoric landscape to life before our eyes. This artwork not only serves as an illustration but also acts as a reconstruction of what Bavaria might have looked like during ancient times. Dr. Friedrich Rolle contributed to the palaeontology section of Dr. Schubert's book and his expertise shines through in this stunning lithograph. It is worth noting that this particular print was part of a high-volume production aimed at children—an educational tool designed to spark their imagination and curiosity about Earth's history. Paul D. Stewart has captured both the scientific significance and artistic beauty within this panorama with his
