1903 Wright Flyer, museum display. The first powered flight was made by Orville Wright on 17 December 1903 near Kill Devil Hill, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA. Wright, seen lying on the lower wing of the aircraft, designed it with his brother Wilbur. The 12 horse-power, chain-driven aircraft, launched from a take-off rail, flew for about 12 seconds, covering a distance of 36.5 metres, at an altitude between 2.5 and 3.5 metres. The original aircraft was donated in 1948 to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington DC, USA. Between 1976 and 2003, it was displayed here in the Milestones of Flight Gallery
