19th Century Argand lamp, artwork
19th Century Argand lamp. Historical artwork showing an oil lamp designed by the Swiss physicist and chemist Francois Pierre Ami Argand (1750-1803). This lamp had a glass chimney and used a circular hollow wick fitted between two concentric cylindrical metal tubes. This meant that air was supplied to both sides of the wick, increasing the lamps efficiency and therefore its brightness. It was commonly used in lighthouses. Published circa 1867-1870

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable 19th Century Argand lamp, an invention by the ingenious Swiss physicist and chemist Francois Pierre Ami Argand. The historical artwork beautifully captures the intricate design of this oil lamp, which revolutionized lighting during its time. The lamp's brilliance lies in its efficient construction, as depicted in the illustration. With a glass chimney and a circular hollow wick nestled between two concentric cylindrical metal tubes, this masterpiece ensured that air was evenly supplied to both sides of the wick. This innovative feature significantly enhanced the lamp's efficiency, resulting in a brighter light compared to traditional lamps of that era. Originally used predominantly in lighthouses due to its exceptional luminosity, this technological marvel became synonymous with progress and illumination throughout history. Published around 1867-1870, this wood engraving provides us with a glimpse into an era where such inventions were celebrated for their practicality and beauty. As we admire this monochromatic sketch against a pristine white background, we are transported back to an age when craftsmanship merged seamlessly with scientific innovation. This historical artifact serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our perpetual quest for better solutions. Captivatingly detailed yet elegantly simple, this print from the Library of Congress allows us to appreciate not only the artistry behind it but also how one man's vision could illuminate countless lives across generations.
