Tunguska forest

Aerial view of the landscape around Tunguska, 100 years after the famous explosion. At around 7.14am local time on 30 June 1908 a powerful explosion occurred above the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in the Krasnoyarsk region of Russia. It is believed that this was the air burst of a meteoroid or cometary fragment a few tens of metres across. Even though the explosion was 5-10 kilometres above the ground, the energy released was enough to flatten an estimated 80 million trees across an area of 2150 square kilometres. The energy released has been calculated as equivalent to 10-15 megatons of TNT - similar to a large hydrogen bomb

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view captures the haunting aftermath of the Tunguska forest, a century after the infamous explosion that shook the world. On that fateful morning of June 30th, 1908, at precisely 7:14 am local time, an unimaginably powerful blast erupted above the serene Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Russia's Krasnoyarsk region. The devastation caused by this cataclysmic event was awe-inspiring. Despite occurring approximately 5-10 kilometers above ground level, its impact reverberated across a staggering expanse of nature. An estimated 80 million trees spanning over an area of 2150 square kilometers were mercilessly flattened by the sheer force unleashed upon them. Scientists believe that this colossal explosion resulted from an air burst caused by a meteoroid or cometary fragment measuring only tens of meters across. The energy released during this cosmic collision has been calculated to be equivalent to a mind-boggling 10-15 megatons of TNT—comparable to that of a large hydrogen bomb. As we gaze upon this photograph print marking the centenary anniversary of such an extraordinary occurrence, we are reminded not only of nature's immense power but also our own insignificance in comparison. The twisted remnants and barren landscape serve as silent witnesses to one of history's most enigmatic events—a reminder that even within our modern era, mysteries still abound in our vast universe.
