Albert Einstein, Swiss-German physicist C017 / 7104
Albert Einstein (1879-1955), Swiss-German-US physicist. Einsteins famous mass-energy equation resulted from his 1905 paper on Special Relativity. This paper, with his 1915 General Theory of Relativity, replaced the Newtonian world view, rewriting the concepts of gravity, space and time. Einstein also contributed to theories of quantum physics. He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the photoelectric effect. Emigrating to the USA in 1933, he encouraged the atomic bomb project. In later years he campaigned for nuclear disarmament. In 1999, he was made Person of the Century by TIME magazine

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Albert Einstein, a brilliant Swiss-German physicist who reshaped our understanding of the universe. Known for his groundbreaking theories and revolutionary contributions to science, Einstein's intellectual prowess is immortalized in this portrait. Einstein's most famous achievement was his mass-energy equation, derived from his 1905 paper on Special Relativity. This remarkable work, along with his 1915 General Theory of Relativity, challenged Newtonian principles and completely transformed our comprehension of gravity, space, and time. Not limited to these accomplishments alone, Einstein also made significant strides in quantum physics. His profound insights into the field earned him the prestigious Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for his research on the photoelectric effect. In addition to his scientific endeavors, Einstein played an influential role during World War II by encouraging the development of atomic weapons through projects like the Manhattan Project after emigrating to the United States in 1933. However, he later became an advocate for nuclear disarmament as he witnessed its devastating consequences. Recognizing his immense impact on humanity's understanding of science and society at large, TIME magazine honored him as Person of the Century in 1999. Through this artwork by GARY BROWN/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, we are reminded not only of Einstein's genius but also of his complex legacy that continues to shape our world today.
