Alchemist at work, 19th century
Alchemist at work. 19th-century artwork of an alchemist with bellows observing human shapes appearing in the smoke rising from his furnace. Various alchemical equipment is scattered around, and an owl is perched on his high-backed chair. Stuffed crocodiles, a common symbol in such scenes, are hanging from the ceiling. Other mystical symbols include tarot cards and skulls and bones. This engraving is by French artist Gustave Dore (1832-1883). The artist name at lower left refers to a member of the Pannemaker family, several of whom worked with Dore
