It is the second largest obelisk in Rome and reaches a height of 36.5 metres. The obelisk originally stood in Heliopolis, Egypt, during the reign of Ramses II in the 19th dynasty (13th century BC). It was brought to Rome in the year 10 BC by order of the emperor Augustus and placed in the Circus Maximus (a Roman entertainment venue). It was discovered broken into three pieces in 1587 but was repaired and re-erected in the Piazza del Popolo in 1589 by the Italian architect and engineer Domenico Fontana (1543-1607)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Ancient Egyptian Obelisk in Rome, known as the obelisco Flaminio. Standing proudly at the heart of Piazza del Popolo in Rome, Italy, this remarkable structure is the second largest obelisk in the city and stands tall at an impressive height of 36.5 meters. Originally erected in Heliopolis, Egypt during Ramses II's reign in the 19th dynasty (13th century BC), this ancient artifact was transported to Rome by order of Emperor Augustus in 10 BC. Initially placed within Circus Maximus, a renowned Roman entertainment venue, it faced adversity when discovered broken into three pieces in 1587. However, thanks to the skillful restoration efforts led by Italian architect and engineer Domenico Fontana (1543-1607), this iconic obelisk was repaired and re-erected with great precision within Piazza del Popolo just two years later. The intricate hieroglyphics adorning its surface tell tales of a rich history that spans centuries. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring monument today, we are reminded of both Egypt's ancient civilization and Rome's enduring architectural legacy. This mesmerizing print from Science Photo Library allows us to appreciate not only the grandeur of this archaeological wonder but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our ability to preserve and celebrate our shared cultural heritage across borders and time.
