Apollo 11 launch. US flag flying as the Apollo 11 Saturn V rocket launched at 09:32 local time (EDT) on 16 July 1969. On board were US astronauts Armstrong, Michael Collins and Aldrin. The launch took place from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA. The mission successfully landed Armstrong and Aldrin on the Moon, the first manned landings on the lunar surface. Collins piloted the Command Module. The descent from lunar orbit took place on 20 July, with the ascent on 21 July, and splashdown on Earth on 24 July. A US flag was among the items left on the Moon
