Arches of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

Arches of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. At 307 metres, this aqueduct is the longest and highest cast-iron aqueduct in the world. It carries the Llangollen canal 38 metres above the River Dee. It was designed by Thomas Telford and constructed between 1795 and 1805. The iron castings were produced at the Plaskynaston foundry and each casting dovetails into the next. The joints were made watertight using welsh flannel dipped in boiling sugar, after which the joints were sealed with lead. The aqueduct is a grade 1 listed building. It is still used for its original purpose and is crossed by more than 1000 boats each year

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Arches of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct stand tall and proud, a testament to the ingenuity and engineering prowess of Thomas Telford. This magnificent structure stretches an impressive 307 meters, making it both the longest and highest cast-iron aqueduct in the world. Perched above the picturesque River Dee, this architectural marvel carries the Llangollen canal 38 meters above its waters. Its iron castings, meticulously produced at Plaskynaston foundry, fit seamlessly together like a perfectly crafted puzzle. To ensure watertight joints, Welsh flannel dipped in boiling sugar was used before sealing them with lead. Designated as a grade 1 listed building, this historic aqueduct continues to serve its original purpose even today. More than just an awe-inspiring sight for visitors from all over Europe and beyond, it remains a vital crossing point for over 1000 boats each year. As you gaze upon this aerial view captured by Science Photo Library, you can't help but admire how these arches gracefully span across the stunning River Dee Valley landscape. The combination of stone pillars and iron arches creates a harmonious blend of strength and elegance that has stood strong since its construction between 1795 and 1805. This print is not just an image; it's a glimpse into British history and an appreciation for human achievement in architecture and engineering. It serves as a reminder that even centuries-old structures can continue to inspire wonderment in our modern world.
