Aries constellations, 1829 C016 / 4400

Aries constellations. 19th-century map of stars and constellations from the celestial atlas Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh (1829) by Kornelius Reissig, an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg. The title translates as: Presentation of constellations in 30 tables. This was the earliest Russian star atlas, and was based on earlier work by Bode (1806) and Flamsteed (1776). The constellations are labelled in Cyrillic, represented by mythological figures and animals. This is Plate 14, showing the constellations of Aries (centre), Musca Borealis (the Northern Fly, above Aries), and Triangulum (the Triangles, also above Aries)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of astronomical history - the Aries constellations as depicted in the 19th-century celestial atlas "Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh" by Kornelius Reissig. As an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences, Reissig meticulously crafted this star map based on earlier works by Bode and Flamsteed. The image reveals Plate 14 of this groundbreaking atlas, displaying not only the constellation of Aries at its center but also Musca Borealis (the Northern Fly) and Triangulum (the Triangles) positioned above it. Each constellation is elegantly labeled in Cyrillic script and represented through mythological figures and animals. The black background adds a touch of mystery to this historical artwork, while the intricate grid and diagram provide a sense of scientific precision. Punched holes throughout the print further enhance its authenticity, evoking images of astronomers from centuries past using similar tools for observation. With gold leaf accents adding a touch of opulence, this stunning representation transports us back to the early 1800s when celestial cartography was still in its infancy. It serves as a testament to human curiosity about our place in the universe and our relentless pursuit to understand it. This print captures not just an exquisite piece of art but also an invaluable contribution to astronomical knowledge that continues to inspire scientists and stargazers alike.
