Artwork of a gamma-ray burster F006 / 8797

This is a view of a Wolf-Rayet star that has exploded in a gamma ray burst (GRB) event. Two jets have erupted out of the core, through the surrounding nebula (blue). This is the collapsar theory of GRBs, which says GRBs result from the collapse of the core of a massive star, like Type II supernovae but even more powerful. The spin or magnetic field of the black hole forms jets from surrounding material that is being ejected at near the speed of light. The jets are the source of the gamma rays of a GRB, a massive short-lived energy burst, hundreds of times brighter than an ordinary supernova

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing artwork of a gamma-ray burster, F006/8797. The image portrays a Wolf-Rayet star that has undergone an explosive event known as a gamma ray burst (GRB). From the core of this celestial body, two powerful jets have erupted, piercing through the surrounding nebula in a striking shade of blue. The fascinating collapsar theory of GRBs suggests that these bursts occur due to the collapse of massive stars' cores, surpassing even the immense power unleashed by Type II supernovae. As depicted in this illustration against a black background with polar elements, it is believed that the spin or magnetic field of a black hole generates these jets from material being expelled at near-light speeds. These jets serve as the source for the intense gamma rays emitted during a GRB – colossal bursts of energy that shine hundreds of times brighter than ordinary supernovae. This conceptually rich artwork delves into cosmology and stellar phenomena, offering viewers an insight into star death and unveiling mysteries surrounding wolf rayets, black holes, and colliding cosmic forces. Created by acclaimed artist Mark Garlick exclusively for Science Photo Library's collection, this awe-inspiring piece invites us to contemplate our vast universe's wonders while celebrating humanity's ongoing quest to comprehend its intricacies.
