Astronaut plant experiment on the ISS C016 / 4206
Astronaut plant experiment on the ISS. Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov (born 1973), Expedition 28 flight engineer, checking the progress of a plant experiment on the International Space Station (ISS). This is a new growth experiment that is part of the BIO-5 Rasteniya-2 (Plants-2) payload, housed in its LADA-01 greenhouse. Such experiments are carried out to see how plants grow in space, especially to try and ascertain the effects of free fall and reduced weight (microgravity). This experiment, operated by Russian space company RSC Energia, is located in the Zvezda Service Module of the ISS. Photographed on 31 August 2011

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov conducting a plant experiment on the International Space Station (ISS). As part of the BIO-5 Rasteniya-2 payload, housed in the LADA-01 greenhouse, this new growth experiment aims to explore how plants thrive in space. With reduced weight and microgravity being key factors, scientists are eager to understand the effects of free fall on plant growth. The image showcases Volkov diligently checking the progress of these extraordinary space crops. Clad in his astronaut suit, he stands amidst an array of lush greenery that defies Earth's gravity. The sight is both awe-inspiring and thought-provoking as it highlights humanity's continuous quest for knowledge beyond our planet. Operated by Russian space company RSC Energia, this groundbreaking experiment takes place within the Zvezda Service Module of the ISS. It serves as a testament to mankind's technological prowess and determination to unravel nature's mysteries even amidst challenging conditions. This photograph captures not only scientific research but also symbolizes our relentless pursuit of understanding life beyond our home planet. It represents a harmonious blend between human ingenuity and nature's resilience while reminding us that exploration knows no bounds - be it through botany or interstellar travel.
