Astronomical Quadrants Illustration C017 / 3536

Plate from 18th century encyclopedia showing an illustration of Gunters and Suttons quadrants. A quadrant is an instrument made of wood, brass or other substance, containing a kind of stereographic projection of the sphere on the plane of the equinoctial, the eye being supposed to be placed in one of the poles, so that the tropic, ecliptic, and horizon form the arcs of circles, but the hour circles are other curves, drawn by means of several altitudes of the sun for some particular latitude every year. This instrument is used to find the hour of the day, the suns azimuth, etc. and other common problems of the sphere or globe, and also to take the altitude of an object in degrees

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an Astronomical Quadrants Illustration C017 / 3536, taken from an 18th-century encyclopedia. The image depicts Gunters and Suttons quadrants, which were essential instruments used in the field of astronomy during that era. Quadrants are fascinating devices crafted from wood, brass, or other materials. They feature a unique stereographic projection of the sphere onto the plane of the equinoctial. When using this instrument, one would imagine themselves stationed at either pole while observing how the tropic, ecliptic, and horizon form arcs of circles. However, it is worth noting that hour circles are represented by different curves drawn based on various altitudes of the sun for a specific latitude each year. The primary purpose behind these quadrants was to solve common problems related to celestial bodies such as determining the time of day accurately or finding the sun's azimuth. Moreover, they were instrumental in measuring altitude degrees for any given object. In this visually stunning illustration captured by DAVID PARKER/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, we can appreciate both its historical significance and intricate design elements. The combination of wood and brass creates a harmonious blend between functionality and aesthetic appeal. Overall, this extraordinary photograph offers us a glimpse into centuries-old astronomical practices while reminding us of humanity's relentless pursuit to understand our place within the vastness of space.
