Atomic burst over Hiroshima, 1945

Atomic burst over Hiroshima, coloured image. On 6th August 1945, during World War II, a US bomber dropped the Little Boy atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan. The atomic explosion, equivalent to 12, 500 tons of TNT, destroyed the city and generated a dense column of smoke and a mushroom cloud. Here, the column is six kilometres high and its base is three kilometres across. This was the first atomic bomb used in warfare, the second being used over Nagasaki three days later. Over 220, 000 people died in the attacks, and thousands were injured. Japan surrendered a few days later. For the original version of this image, see T162/128

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the devastating moment when an atomic bomb was dropped over Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. The image showcases the immense power and destruction unleashed by this unprecedented weapon during World War II. The vibrant colors bring to life the horror and chaos that unfolded on that fateful day. The column of smoke rising from the explosion is a chilling reminder of the lives lost and the city reduced to rubble. Standing six kilometers high with a base spanning three kilometers, it serves as a haunting testament to mankind's ability to harness destructive forces. This marked the first time an atomic bomb had been used in warfare, forever changing the course of history. Just three days later, another devastating attack would occur over Nagasaki, further escalating death tolls and injuries. Over 220,000 people perished as a result of these attacks, leaving behind countless others injured physically and emotionally. It was only after witnessing such unimaginable devastation that Japan finally surrendered. This photograph not only documents a pivotal moment in human history but also serves as a stark reminder of our capacity for destruction. It stands as a symbol of both technological advancement and its potential consequences when placed in wrong hands. As we reflect upon this image, let us remember those who suffered during this dark chapter while striving towards peace and understanding for future generations.
