ATV re-entry, artwork
Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) re-entry, artwork. This is an unmanned resupply vehicle used by the European Space Agency to supply the International Space Station (ISS). After being released in orbit an ATV uses its thrusters to dock with the ISS. It is also used to boost the ISS to reverse orbit degradation. After being loaded with waste, it separates and de-orbits, burning up in Earths atmosphere. This is the Jules Verne ATV, launched on 9 March 2008. It docked with the ISS on 3 April 2008, and de-orbited five months later on 29 September 2008. Jules Verne was the first ATV. The second ATV was launched in 2011

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the dramatic re-entry of an Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) into Earth's atmosphere. The ATV, depicted in this illustration, was a remarkable unmanned resupply vehicle utilized by the European Space Agency to support the International Space Station (ISS). In this mesmerizing scene, we witness the ATV ablating and disintegrating as it plunges through our planet's atmospheric layers. The intense heat generated during re-entry causes flames to engulf its exterior, creating a breathtaking display of fiery brilliance against the backdrop of space. The Jules Verne ATV, showcased here, made history as the first-ever ATV launched on 9 March 2008. After skillfully docking with the ISS on 3 April 2008 and fulfilling its crucial supply mission for five months, it embarked on its final journey towards Earth's surface. As it hurtles downwards carrying waste from the station, this technological marvel meets its fate in a blaze of glory. The high temperatures encountered during descent cause gradual disintegration until only fragments remain before ultimately burning up completely upon reaching our planet's surface. This awe-inspiring image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and scientific progress in space exploration during the early years of the twenty-first century. It reminds us of our relentless pursuit to push boundaries beyond Earth's limits while ensuring vital supplies reach those who dwell among distant stars.
