Biorock reef restoration, Indonesia C016 / 8108

Biorock reef restoration. Marine biologists collecting coral fragments to populate a Biorock reef restoration structure. The Biorock process was developed by Thomas Goreau and Wolf Hilbertz in the 1970 s. Electricity is used to promote the deposition of calcium carbonate, which builds up on the surface of the structure giving hard corals a base to bond to. The process is thought to accelerate coral growth by up to four times - however, it has been suggested that simple wire meshes are just as effective. The resulting reef of hard coral soon attracts other inhabitants and the process has been touted as a way to rehabilitate reefs in all tropical areas. Photographed in Gili Trawangan, Lombok, Indonesia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable process of Biorock reef restoration in Indonesia. Marine biologists are seen diligently collecting coral fragments to populate a Biorock reef restoration structure, showcasing their commitment to rehabilitating damaged reefs. Developed by Thomas Goreau and Wolf Hilbertz in the 1970s, the Biorock process utilizes electricity to promote the deposition of calcium carbonate on the surface of structures, providing a solid foundation for hard corals to bond with. This innovative technique is believed to accelerate coral growth up to four times faster than natural processes. However, some experts suggest that simple wire meshes can be equally effective in achieving similar results. Nevertheless, this artificial reef quickly becomes home to an array of marine life as it attracts various inhabitants seeking refuge and sustenance. The potential for rehabilitating reefs across tropical areas has made this method highly regarded within ecological circles. The photograph was taken at Gili Trawangan, Lombok in Indonesia - a location known for its rich marine biodiversity. It beautifully showcases the collaboration between humans and nature as scientists carefully tend to these fragile ecosystems underwater. With its stunning visual composition capturing both scientific endeavor and natural beauty, this image serves as a testament to our ongoing efforts towards environmental conservation and preservation. Photographer Matthew Oldfield from Science Photo Library expertly documents this momentous occasion where technology meets ecology – reminding us all of our responsibility towards protecting our oceans' delicate balance.
