Bird specimens, 18th century C015 / 6066

Bird specimens, 18th-century artwork. The hooded crow (Corvus cornix, upper left, also sea-crow ), is found on the Isle of Man. The toucan-like bird ( Brazilian magpie, upper right) was found dead on the Lancashire coast after a violent hailstorm, which also killed a tropicbird (centre left, family Phaethontidae). At centre right is a copped wren. At lower left is an osprey (Pandion haliaetus). At lower right is a Soland goose (Anser bassanus). Artwork from The Natural History of Lancashire, Cheshire, and the Peak in Derbyshire (1700) by English physician and naturalist Charles Leigh, elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1685

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th-century artwork showcases a collection of bird specimens, each with its own unique story. In the upper left corner, we have the hooded crow, also known as the sea-crow, which can be found on the picturesque Isle of Man. Moving to the upper right, we encounter a toucan-like bird called the Brazilian magpie. Sadly, this magnificent creature was discovered lifeless on Lancashire's coast after a violent hailstorm ravaged through. Alongside it lies another casualty of nature's fury - a tropicbird from the Phaethontidae family. Intriguingly positioned at center-right is a copped wren, while at lower left stands an osprey gracefully captured in flight. Finally, our attention is drawn to the lower right corner where an exquisite Soland goose takes its place in this remarkable composition. Created by Charles Leigh - an esteemed English physician and naturalist elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1685 - this artwork originates from his renowned publication "The Natural History of Lancashire, Cheshire, and The Peak in Derbyshire" dating back to 1700. Leigh's meticulous illustrations provide us with invaluable insights into Britain's rich fauna during that era. As we delve into this monochrome masterpiece filled with historical significance and ornithological wonders, let us appreciate both nature's beauty and mankind's dedication to understanding and documenting it for generations to come.
