Brittle star on a sea pen

Brittlestar (Ophiothrix sp. red) on a sea pen (Virgularia sp. purple). Sea pens are a type of octocoral. The brittle star is a marine invertebrate that is related to starfish. It has five flexible arms radiating from a central disc-shaped body, which means that unlike starfish it can use its arms to walk on the sea floor. Its mouth is underneath its body. Some brittle stars scavenge on debris on the sea floor, while others use their arms to filter food from the water. Photographed off Rinca, Indonesia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the underwater world. A vibrant Brittle star, belonging to the Ophiothrix sp. red species, gracefully perches on a sea pen of Virgularia sp. purple, an enchanting octocoral found in the depths of our oceans. The Brittle star is a fascinating marine invertebrate closely related to starfish, boasting five flexible arms that radiate from its disc-shaped body. Unlike its relatives, this creature can skillfully utilize its arms to navigate and walk along the sandy seabed. Its mouth resides underneath its body, allowing it to scavenge debris or filter food particles from surrounding water. Captured off Rinca Island in Indonesia's breathtaking waters, this photograph encapsulates nature's wonders with precision and artistry. The image transports us into an indescribable realm where Asian coral reefs flourish abundantly alongside diverse marine life. Immersed within this frame lies a testament to biology's marvels as we witness the harmonious coexistence between echinoderms and octocorals – two distinct yet interconnected branches of aquatic fauna. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this moment for all admirers of oceanic ecosystems and zoological enthusiasts alike. Let your imagination dive deep into these Indonesian waters as you explore the delicate balance between creatures like brittle stars and sea pens - reminding us once again how precious our planet's biodiversity truly is.
