Captured German U-boat, World War I C014 / 2044

Captured German U-boat. This is the SM UC-5 minelayer submarine, operated by the German Imperial Navy during the First World War (1914-1918). A small U-boat with a crew of 14, it operated in coastal waters such as the English Channel. Its mines (two visible here) sank 29 ships. It ran aground on 27 April 1916 near Harwich, to where it was towed after being captured by the Royal Navy (British and German flags present). Here, it is at Sheerness. It was later moored at Temple Pier on the Thames, London, and displayed in Central Park, New York, USA. Photograph from the Bain News Service, one of the USAs earliest news picture libraries

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the captured German U-boat, SM UC-5, during World War I. Operating under the German Imperial Navy, this minelayer submarine played a significant role in coastal waters such as the English Channel. With its crew of 14 brave sailors, it deployed mines that successfully sank an astonishing 29 ships. However, fate had a different plan for UC-5 when it ran aground near Harwich on April 27th, 1916. Seizing this opportunity, the Royal Navy swiftly towed and captured the vessel. In this remarkable image taken at Sheerness, both British and German flags proudly fly side by side as symbols of victory and conquest. Later on, after being moored at Temple Pier on the Thames in London, this war trophy found itself displayed in Central Park, New York City—an awe-inspiring testament to technological advancements and naval warfare during one of history's most turbulent periods. Photographed by Bain News Service—one of America's earliest news picture libraries—this monochrome image captures not only a moment frozen in time but also represents an era defined by conflict and innovation. The sheer scale of destruction caused by these submarines highlights their pivotal role in shaping world events during World War I. As we gaze upon this historic artifact today, let us remember those who served aboard UC-5—the courageous men who navigated treacherous waters with unwavering determination to protect their homeland while leaving an indelible mark on maritime history.
