Clement Ader, French engineer

Clement Ader (1841-1926), French engineer and aviation pioneer. Aders early career was spent inventing numerous electrical and mechanical devices. He is famous for making several powered flights in the years before the Wright brothers, though, unlike those made by the Wright brothers, Aders flights are considered uncontrolled flights. Ader constructed his first flying machine, the Eole, a steam-powered bat-like design, in 1886, flying 50 metres in it in 1890. Ader later built the Avion II and the Avion III, to a similar design. The Avion III is said to have flown 300 metres in 1897, but the French Army were not impressed and withdrew funding

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Clement Ader, a remarkable French engineer and aviation pioneer. Known for his groundbreaking contributions to early flight, Ader's legacy is etched in history as he made several powered flights before the Wright brothers took to the skies. However, unlike their controlled flights, Ader's endeavors are considered uncontrolled. In 1886, Ader constructed his first flying machine called the Eole. This steam-powered bat-like design allowed him to soar through the air for an impressive 50 meters in 1890. Undeterred by challenges, he went on to build two more aircrafts - Avion II and Avion III - following a similar design. The Avion III holds a significant place in aviation history as it reportedly flew an astonishing distance of 300 meters in 1897. Despite this achievement, the French Army was not convinced and withdrew funding for further development. This colored portrait showcases an elderly but determined man who dedicated his life to pushing boundaries and exploring new frontiers of engineering. With steam power at his disposal, Clement Ader defied convention and paved the way for future aviators. As we gaze upon this image from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of Ader's unwavering passion that propelled him towards becoming one of France's most influential inventors. His contributions continue to inspire generations interested in both engineering marvels and humanity's relentless pursuit of flight throughout history.
