Collection of white daisy flowers

Daisies. Collection of white daisy flowers (family: Compositae). Each flower is actually a cluster of tiny individual flowers, or florets. The white " petals" are sterile ray florets. The yellow florets are fertile, those in the outer ring maturing earliest to expose pollen-bearing anthers to insects. The yellow florets are arranged in two sets of interlocking spirals, corresponding to the Fibonacci mathematical series of numbers. Fibonacci spirals are also seen in pine cones and pineapple fruit. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases a stunning collection of white daisy flowers, belonging to the Compositae family. Each delicate flower is actually an intricate cluster of tiny individual florets, creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle. The pure white petals that we commonly associate with daisies are in fact sterile ray florets, while the vibrant yellow florets at the center are fertile and play a crucial role in reproduction. What makes this image even more fascinating is the arrangement of these yellow florets. They form two sets of interlocking spirals, following the mathematical series known as Fibonacci. This spiral pattern can also be observed in other natural wonders like pine cones and pineapple fruit. The meticulous attention to detail captured by Science Photo Library allows us to appreciate not only the beauty but also the complexity found within nature's creations. These daisies serve as a reminder that even seemingly simple flowers possess remarkable intricacies when examined closely. Through this photograph, we delve into botany and plant science, exploring angiosperms and their diverse characteristics. It's awe-inspiring how such small wonders can hold so much scientific significance. Science Photo Library once again delivers an extraordinary piece of artistry that celebrates both nature's elegance and its profound connection with mathematics – reminding us that beauty truly lies in understanding our world on multiple levels.
