Comet Shoemaker-Levy striking Jupiter
Comet Shoemaker-Levy impact on Jupiter, July 1994. Artists impression of a vast explosion in the atmosphere of Jupiter caused by the disintegration of a fragment of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. Over 20 fragments, each of more than 1 km diameter, are expected to hit the planet on 18-24 July 1994. The comet was broken apart by Jupiters gravitational field during a close encounter in July 1992. The energy released in an average impact is equivalent to about 250, 000 hydrogen bombs. These impacts will not be visible directly from Earth, but the effects on the atmosphere will be seen as the impact points rotate into view

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring moment when Comet Shoemaker-Levy collided with Jupiter in July 1994. The artist's impression vividly portrays the immense explosion that occurred in Jupiter's atmosphere as a result of the disintegration of a fragment from this comet. Anticipation was high as more than 20 fragments, each larger than 1 km in diameter, were expected to strike the planet between July 18th and 24th. The origins of this celestial spectacle can be traced back to a close encounter between Comet Shoemaker-Levy and Jupiter in July 1992, during which Jupiters gravitational field shattered the comet into numerous pieces. It is estimated that an average impact unleashed energy equivalent to an astonishing quarter-million hydrogen bombs. While these impacts could not be directly observed from Earth, their effects on Jupiter's atmosphere became visible as the impact points rotated into view. This extraordinary event serves as a reminder of both the destructive power and mesmerizing beauty present within our vast universe. This remarkable print by Science Photo Library allows us to marvel at this cosmic collision, showcasing science and art intertwined seamlessly. It invites us to contemplate our place within the cosmos while offering a glimpse into one of nature's most extraordinary phenomena – a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about our universe beyond Earth’s boundaries.
