Common vampire bat colony

Common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) colony. These bats inhabit forests and scrubland from Mexico to southern South America. They feed only on blood. It is the only bat that can walk and run on the ground, for which it uses its large thumbs (seen at the mid- point of each wing) as a pair of limbs. Its saliva contains an anticoagulant that prevents the blood from clotting, allowing it to feed for a longer time. It lives in colonies in caves or hollow trees. Photographed in the Pantanal, Brazil

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a Common vampire bat colony in all its intriguing glory. The Common vampire bats, scientifically known as Desmodus rotundus, are native to the lush forests and scrublands spanning from Mexico to southern South America. These remarkable creatures have evolved unique adaptations that set them apart from other bats. In this image, we witness their distinctive ability to walk and run on the ground using their large thumbs located at the midpoint of each wing. This extraordinary feature allows them to navigate both land and air effortlessly. As bloodsuckers, they possess saliva containing an anticoagulant that prevents clotting, enabling them to feed for extended periods. Living in colonies nestled within caves or hollow trees, these small South American mammals exhibit fascinating social behavior. Here in Brazil's Pantanal region, they find solace amidst tropical surroundings while roosting together with fellow members of their species. The intricate details captured by Science Photo Library showcase the beauty of these winged creatures up close. From their leaf-nosed appearance to their delicate wingspan, every aspect highlights the wonders of nature's creations. This mesmerizing photograph serves as a testament not only to Brazil's diverse fauna but also to our ever-growing understanding of zoology and biology. It reminds us that even within the darkest corners of our world lie hidden marvels waiting to be discovered by those who dare venture into nature's embrace.
