EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable Cosmonaut Valery Polyakov, a true pioneer of space exploration. Taken before the launch of the Soyuz TM6 mission to the Mir Space Station, Polyakov stands tall and confident in his space suit at Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan on 29th August 1988. As a doctor by profession, Polyakov's role extended beyond that of an astronaut. His primary objective was to monitor and ensure the health and well-being of his fellow crew members during their time aboard Mir. This particular mission saw him dock with Mir on 31st August alongside two other cosmonauts. Polyakov's dedication to science and humanity is evident through his record-breaking achievements. He holds the prestigious title for the longest spaceflight in human history, spending an astonishing 14 months aboard Mir between January 1994 and March 1995. A caucasian man in his forties at that time, Polyakov symbolizes not only Russian excellence but also represents a significant milestone in global space exploration efforts. His contribution to manned spaceflight has left an indelible mark on history as he pushed boundaries and expanded our understanding of life beyond Earth. This extraordinary photograph from Science Photo Library serves as a testament to both Polyakov's personal journey as an astronaut-doctor and mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge in outer space throughout the twentieth century.
