Crew of the Voskhod 1 spacecraft, 1964
Crew of the Voskhod 1 spacecraft. Soviet cosmonauts Konstantin Feoktistov (left, 1926-2009), Boris Yegorov (centre, 1937-1994) and Vladimir Komarov (right, 1927-1967), after landing the Voskhod 1 spacecraft. They had launched on 12 October 1964 from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, in what was the first spaceflight to carry three people. They orbited the Earth 16 times, and landed on 13 October 1964. Komarov, the pilot, would later be killed during the uncontrolled landing of the Soyuz 1 spacecraft. Yegorov, a doctor, resumed his medical career. Feoktistov, an engineer, never flew again due to medical reasons, but later became head of the Soviet space design bureau. All three cosmonauts were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union

EDITORS COMMENTS
This iconic print captures the historic moment when the crew of the Voskhod 1 spacecraft, comprising Soviet cosmonauts Konstantin Feoktistov, Boris Yegorov, and Vladimir Komarov, landed safely after their groundbreaking mission. Taken in 1964 at Baikonur, Kazakhstan, this image showcases the brave trio who embarked on the first-ever spaceflight to carry three individuals. Having completed 16 orbits around Earth during their journey that began on October 12th and ended on October 13th, these courageous men made significant strides in space exploration. However, destiny would take a tragic turn for some of them later in their careers. Vladimir Komarov, seen standing confidently on the right side of the photograph as the pilot of Voskhod 1, met an untimely demise during an uncontrolled landing of Soyuz 1 spacecraft. Boris Yegorov continued his medical profession following this mission while Konstantin Feoktistov's future space endeavors were cut short due to medical reasons. Nevertheless, Feoktistov went on to become head of the Soviet space design bureau. Recognizing their immense bravery and contributions to science and humanity's understanding of outer space exploration; all three cosmonauts were awarded with well-deserved titles - Heroes of the Soviet Union. This monochrome image portrays a snapshot frozen in time from a pivotal era in history: The Space Race between superpowers during mid-20th century. It serves as a reminder not only of human achievement but also highlights both triumphs and tragedies experienced by those who dared venture beyond our planet's atmosphere.
