Curiosity rovers descent

Curiosity rovers descent. Image taken by NASAs Curiosity Rover during its descent to the surface of Mars on 6th August 2012 (EDT), showing its heat shield (round) below it. Curiosity was launched on 26th November 2011 and landed successfully on Mars on 6th August 2012. Its mission is to determine if Mars is, or was ever, able to support microbial life. This image was obtained by the Mars Descent Imager (MARDI) instrument and shows the 4.5-metre diameter heat shield when it was about 16 meters from the spacecraft. It was obtained two and a half minutes before touching down on the surface of Mars and about three seconds after heat shield separation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring descent of NASA's Curiosity Rover to the surface of Mars on August 6,2012. Taken by the rover itself using its Mars Descent Imager (MARDI) instrument, this image showcases the remarkable engineering and technological prowess behind this groundbreaking mission. The photograph reveals Curiosity's heat shield, a round structure measuring 4.5 meters in diameter, positioned just below the rover as it gracefully makes its way towards the Martian terrain. Separated from its protective shield merely three seconds prior to capturing this momentous shot, Curiosity is seen confidently descending towards its destination. Launched on November 26,2011, and successfully landing on Mars nine months later, Curiosity's primary objective is to investigate whether or not Mars has ever been capable of supporting microbial life. This ambitious venture represents a significant milestone in planetary science and our understanding of our neighboring planet. The vibrant color image offers a glimpse into the marvels of space exploration as we witness humanity's ingenuity at work. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and determination to unravel the mysteries that lie beyond Earth's boundaries. This extraordinary photograph was obtained during one of mankind's most technologically advanced missions yet – an endeavor that continues to shape our knowledge about Mars and pave the way for future interplanetary explorations.
