Davis anti-submarine gun, World War I C016 / 6355
Davis anti-submarine gun. World War I-era anti-submarine gun mounted on a flying boat. The Davis gun was developed in 1910 by Cleland Davis of the US Navy. It was the first successful recoilless gun, with the recoil from the downward projectile cancelled out by the recoil from a counter-projectile that travelled out of the rear barrel and over the wing of the aeroplane. The Lewis machine gun mounted on the Davis gun was used for sighting. The Davis gun was intended for use against submarines. Photographed in November 1918

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in World War I history. The image showcases the Davis anti-submarine gun, an innovative weapon developed by Cleland Davis of the US Navy in 1910. This early pioneer of technological warfare revolutionized naval combat with its recoilless design. Mounted on a flying boat, this remarkable invention aimed to counter the threat posed by submarines during maritime battles. The Davis gun's ingenious mechanism canceled out the downward projectile's recoil through a counter-projectile that traveled out of the rear barrel and over the wing of the aeroplane. To aid sighting, it was equipped with a Lewis machine gun. Taken in November 1918, at the height of World War I, this photograph symbolizes human ingenuity and determination to overcome adversity. It portrays an adult male pilot or gunner standing beside his aircraft armed with this groundbreaking technology. The historical significance of this image cannot be overstated as it represents one of many advancements made during this turbulent period in aviation and military history. As we gaze upon this monochrome snapshot from almost a century ago, we are reminded of how far we have come technologically since then. Preserved within the National Photo Company Collection at Library of Congress/Science Photo Library, this print serves as a testament to our collective past while also honoring those who played crucial roles in shaping our present-day world.
