Dolphins hunting mackerel C015 / 2824
Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) hunting blue jack mackerel (Trachurus picturatus). The mackerel have formed a bait ball, a defensive manoeuvre performed by schooling fish that makes it harder for the predators to pick out individuals. However, it can also draw the attention of other predators, some of which have learnt how to take advantage of the tactic. This bait ball has been much reduced in size by the hunting. Photographed in the Azores

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing moment in the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean. A pod of Short-beaked common dolphins, known scientifically as Delphinus delphis, are seen engaged in an exhilarating hunt for blue jack mackerel, scientifically named Trachurus picturatus. The mackerel have cleverly formed a bait ball, a defensive tactic used by schooling fish to confuse and deter predators. In this image, we witness the intricate dance between predator and prey unfold beneath the surface. The bait ball has been significantly reduced in size due to the relentless pursuit of these intelligent marine mammals. As they work together with remarkable precision and coordination, their cooperative hunting strategy is on full display. The azure waters surrounding the Azores serve as a breathtaking backdrop to this extraordinary spectacle of nature's raw power and survival instincts. It is fascinating to observe how other predators are drawn towards this strategic formation, some having learned how to exploit it for their own advantage. Renowned underwater photographer Christopher Swann skillfully captures this fleeting moment that showcases not only the beauty but also the complexity of animal behavior in its natural habitat. Through his lens, we gain insight into the delicate balance between predator and prey within our oceans' ecosystems. This awe-inspiring photograph serves as a reminder of both nature's resilience and fragility while highlighting the incredible diversity found within our planet's rich biodiversity.
