Early escalator, 1894

Early escalator. Historical artwork of the design of a proposed 19th-century escalator. This early design used a non-stepped walkway, like that of a travelator. This artwork dates from 1894. The first escalator was built in 1897 in the USA, but designs had been developed earlier, including an 1892 patent by Charles A. Wheeler. The details of the design (left) show the inclined walkway (bottom) and the handrail (top) revolving around pulleys at the top and bottom of the escalator. Artwork from The Picture Magazine (volume 111, London, 1894)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork takes us back to the late 19th century, showcasing an early design of an escalator that was proposed in 1894. The intricate illustration depicts a non-stepped walkway, resembling what we now know as a travelator. This groundbreaking concept predates the first functioning escalator built in the United States in 1897 by three years. The attention to detail is remarkable, with the inclined walkway clearly visible at the bottom and a handrail revolving around pulleys at both ends of the escalator. The artist's skillful use of color brings life to this black-and-white print from The Picture Magazine (volume 111, London, 1894), allowing us to imagine how this technological marvel would have appeared during its time. It is fascinating to note that even before Charles A. Wheeler patented his design for an escalator in 1892, inventors were already envisioning ways to revolutionize transportation within buildings. This artwork serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our constant pursuit of progress. As we observe this snapshot from history, it becomes evident that technology has come a long way since then. Yet, it is through such visionary creations that paved the path for modern-day conveniences like escalators and travelators which are now integral parts of our daily lives.
