Electroscope experiment. This simple version of an electroscope, designed to detect electric charge, is described as a glass flask with a stopper containing a metal rod. At the upper end of the rod (outside the flask) is mounted a ball. At the other end (inside the flask) strips of aluminium foil (or other lightweight metal) are mounted on a hook. When an electric charge is brought near the electroscope, the foil strips move apart or stick together. Here, the charge is static electricity from the crinkled paper at top.
