Enhanced image of a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton
Tyrannosaurus rex. Computer enhanced image of the upper part of a fossilised Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur skeleton. Tyrannosaurus (tyrant reptile) was a large carnivore, being about 14 metres (m) long, 5m tall and weighing about 7 tonnes. Its sharp, doubly-serrated teeth were up to 15 centi- metres long. Its skull had a thick, bony framework to help it resist damage from struggling prey. Tyrannosaurus rexs front legs were tiny in comparison to its body and it walked on its two hind legs. It first appeared about 70 million years ago before becoming extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period (65 million years ago) along with the other dinosaurs
