Evans steam vessel design, 19th century

Evans steam vessel design. 19th-century magazine article and woodcut artwork of the amphibious steam-powered carriage and paddle boat designed by US inventor Oliver Evans (1755-1819). Known as the Oruktor Amphibolos (amphibious digger), it was developed by Evans in 1805. It was intended for use as a dredger, but was not a success. The wheels shown here were intended to demonstrate that it could be used on land as well, but this claim is disputed. This woodcut engraving is on page 17 of the July 1834 issue of The Boston mechanic and journal of the useful arts and sciences (here called The Mechanic ), published in Boston, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the innovative steam vessel design of Oliver Evans, a brilliant American inventor from the 19th century. The woodcut artwork featured in this image is taken from an article published in The Boston mechanic and journal of the useful arts and sciences in July 1834. Known as the Oruktor Amphibolos, this extraordinary amphibious steam-powered carriage and paddle boat was created by Evans in 1805 with the intention of serving as a dredger. The engraving depicts not only the impressive paddle boat itself but also its unique wheels, which were meant to demonstrate its potential for land use. However, there remains some dispute regarding whether it could truly function effectively on both water and land. Despite its ambitious concept, unfortunately, this pioneering invention did not achieve success during its time. This historical illustration offers us a glimpse into early industrial advancements and technological marvels that shaped transportation history. It symbolizes human ingenuity and ambition to push boundaries through steam power innovation. As we admire this monochrome artwork capturing Evans' visionary creation, we are reminded of how far technology has come since then while appreciating the significant contributions made by inventors like him who paved the way for modern advancements in various industries across North America and beyond.
