Fossil trilobite from the Cambrian period
Trilobite. Fossil trilobite, Callaria sp. from the Cambrian period (600-525 million years ago). The trilobites were marine arthropods which were once extremely common throughout the worlds oceans for millions of years. Most species are thought to have lived on the sea floor, where they probably scuttled around in search of food like modern crabs do. They had large eyes to help them see in the darkness of the seabed. Their flexible backs allowed them to roll up into a tight ball when being attacked by predators. They became extinct about 65 million years ago, about the same time as the dinosaurs. This individual was found in Morocco
