Francois de Chateaubriand, French writer

Francois-Rene de Chateaubriand (1768-1848), French vicomte and writer. Chateaubriand is considered the founder of Romanticism in French literature. Several of his works were inspired by his travels in Europe, the Middle East, and North America. He also fought as a royalist and wrote political tracts during and after the French Revolution. Other works include Atala (1801), Genie du christianisme (1802), and Les Martyrs (1809). This lithograph, after an 1808 painting by Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, is from volume 3 (1877) of the 9-volume The Trial at Bar of Sir Roger C. D. Tichborne (1875-1880)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph showcases Francois de Chateaubriand, a prominent French writer and the founder of Romanticism in French literature. Born as Francois-Rene de Chateaubriand in 1768, he lived through an era of great political turmoil, including the French Revolution. This portrait captures his intellectual prowess and aristocratic demeanor. Chateaubriand's literary works were deeply influenced by his extensive travels across Europe, the Middle East, and North America. His experiences abroad inspired him to pen renowned masterpieces such as "Atala" (1801), "Genie du christianisme" (1802), and "Les Martyrs" (1809). Not only was he a talented writer but also a dedicated royalist who fought for his beliefs during and after the revolution. The artist behind this lithograph is Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, whose skillful brushstrokes perfectly capture Chateaubriand's essence. The monochrome artwork exudes an air of sophistication that befits this esteemed figure from history. Displayed within volume 3 of "The Trial at Bar of Sir Roger C. D. Tichborne" published between 1875-1880, this print serves as a testament to Chateaubriand's enduring legacy. It offers viewers a glimpse into the cultural significance of his contributions to literature and politics during the late 18th century and early 19th century. Todd-White Art Photography has expertly preserved this historical gem through their meticulous reproduction process. As we admire this portrait today, we are reminded not only of Chateaubriand's immense talent but also his unwavering dedication to shaping French literature amidst turbulent times.
