Franklin investigates the leyden jar
In 1747-8 Benjamin Franklin made numerous investigations into the characteristics of the Leyden jar. He devised a method of charging jars in series, also called charging in cascade. The inner coated surface of the first jar is connected by a hook to the conductor of an electrostatic generator, and its outer coated surface is connected to the inside coating of the next jar and so on for a whole series. The inner coating of the first jar and the outer coating of the third are the terminals of the capacitor

18th Century Benjamin Franklin Capacitor Electrostatic Generator Franklin Leyden Jar Terminals
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Benjamin Franklin's groundbreaking investigations into the Leyden jar during the 18th century. In his quest to understand its characteristics, Franklin devised a revolutionary method known as charging in cascade or series. The image captures the essence of this innovative technique. The photograph depicts a sequence of Leyden jars connected in series, forming an intricate network. Each jar is charged one after another, creating a mesmerizing chain reaction. The inner coated surface of the first jar is linked to an electrostatic generator through a hook, while its outer coating connects to the inside coating of the subsequent jar and so forth throughout the entire series. Franklin's ingenious approach transformed these humble jars into powerful capacitors with immense potential for electrical storage. The terminals of this remarkable capacitor are formed by the inner coating of the first jar and the outer coating of the third – representing both ends where energy can be harnessed. Through this visual masterpiece from Science Photo Library, we witness Franklin's tireless dedication to unraveling nature's mysteries and pushing scientific boundaries. This historic snapshot not only immortalizes his pioneering experiments but also serves as a testament to human curiosity and ingenuity that continues to shape our understanding of electricity today.
